Flying to a beach? Road trip to a national park? Now that summer’s here, chances are you’ll be traveling in the next couple months to make some memories.

If you have a big trip coming up, you may want access to more money on your INB debit card. After all, you don’t want to worry about running low on funds when you’re ordering dinner and drinks for the whole family!

Most INB debit cards have a daily limit of $3,000. We set limits to protect you in the event your card is compromised.

Fraud Protection and Cash When You Need it

But you can increase these limits for a short period of time using your INB digital account!

Here’s how:

  • Sign into your digital bank. Select “Manage Cards” from the main menu.
  • In “My Cards,” choose the card you’d like to increase the limit on. Then choose “Request Temporary Spending Limit Increase.”
  • You’ll then see a message asking you to confirm this option. Hit “Confirm” at the bottom of your screen.

You’ll then have 30 minutes to spend at this newly selected level, which will be the lesser of $10,000 or your current balance. After 30 minutes, your spending limit will revert back to the previous level. (And if needed, you can increase your limit multiple times throughout the day.)

However, using your debit card while traveling and increasing spending limits also comes with some risks. And just like you keep an eye on your valuables when you’re in a crowded tourist spot, you need to keep your eye on your account activity.

To keep your travels as relaxing as possible this summer, it’s important to manage your debit card well to avoid fraud or other financial issues. The INB app and online banking portal include additional tools to protect you.

Don’t forget to take these steps to keep your accounts secure while on the road:

  • Sign up for travel notifications. You want to make sure your account doesn’t get flagged when you’re grocery shopping in California instead of Illinois. Under “Manage Cards” in the menu, select your card, choose “travel notification,” follow the prompts and then hit “submit travel notification.”
  • Bring only what you absolutely need when it comes to cards, travel documents, and other personal information. This minimizes the chances of anything getting lost or stolen.
  • If you won’t be using your debit card, you can completely turn your debit card off, then turn it back on prior to using it again. This is done through the “Manage Cards” tab inside digital banking. (For complete instructions, go to this webpage and scroll to select the Debit Card On/Off tab.)
  • Secure your accounts and devices with strong passwords, passcodes, and updated security software. And back up any important data at home before you leave.
  • Get alerts when your card is used. We highly recommend you receive regular alerts on your account balances; you can choose to get alerts for transactions that were approved, denied or both. Then if you see unexpected balance changes, you can immediately check into it. Choose “Manage Alerts” from the main menu and choose a “Custom” alert.  You then can customize the alert however you’d like, but we suggest creating an alert to receive your account balances daily at any specific time.  You can choose either email or text notifications.
  • Avoid doing any business on public computers and using public WiFi. Be sure to log out of any account after using the device, as well as clear browsing history and cache if possible.
  • Check your credit card statement to make sure no suspicious or unauthorized charges took place on your trip.

And if you happen to be the very unfortunate victim of a theft or lose your card, you should report that as soon as possible. Get peace of mind asap by deactivating your card in your INB app. Simply select the lost/stolen card and choose “Report lost or stolen card.” Once you do that, your card will be deactivated.

(If you find the card, call 877-771-2316, and we will reactivate it for you. If you don’t report the card found, we will contact you by phone, and, if necessary, by email, to verify transaction activity and order you a new card.)

At INB, we’re always happy to answer questions or take steps to help you keep your accounts as secure as possible while you travel. Instead of worrying about fraud or lack of funds on your debit card, we want you to have the best possible memories on your trip!
