One of the most effective ways to protect yourself from tax-related identity theft is by getting an Identity Protection PIN (IP PIN) from the IRS. This is something I recommend all INB tax customers consider doing.

What is an IRS IP PIN?
An IRS IP PIN is a six-digit number assigned to eligible taxpayers that helps protect their tax accounts. It serves as an added layer of security by ensuring that the IRS can verify your identity before processing your tax return. Without this PIN, electronic tax returns will be rejected, and paper returns will undergo additional scrutiny, making it much harder for scammers to impersonate you.
The Value of an IRS IP PIN
- Prevents Fraudulent Returns: The primary benefit of an IP PIN is that it blocks criminals from using your Social Security number to file fraudulent tax returns. Even if someone has access to your personal information, they won’t be able to submit a return without your unique IP PIN.
- Peace of Mind: Knowing that your tax information is safeguarded against identity theft can provide significant peace of mind. You won’t have to worry about someone else filing a return under your name and causing delays in receiving your legitimate refund.
- Easy to Use: Once you have your IP PIN, simply include it on your tax return. It’s a straightforward process that adds a critical security layer without complicating your tax filing experience.
How to Get Your IRS IP PIN
Obtaining an IRS IP PIN is a straightforward process:
- Visit the IRS Website: Go to the IRS’s official website and navigate to the "Get an IP PIN" tool.
- Verify Your Identity: You’ll need to verify your identity by providing information such as your Social Security number, date of birth, filing status, and mailing address. You may also need to answer questions based on your credit history.
- Create an Account: If you don’t already have an account on the IRS website, you’ll need to create one. This involves providing some basic information and verifying your email address.
- Receive Your IP PIN: Once your identity is verified, you will receive your IP PIN. This number will be valid for one year, and you’ll need a new one each tax season.
- Keep Your IP PIN Safe: Store your IP PIN securely, as you’ll need it to file your taxes. The IRS will provide a new IP PIN each year, which you can access through your account.
By getting an IRS IP Pin, you can significantly reduce your risk of tax-related identity theft.
