Year after year, Tom Whooley has built a strong track record of growth and leadership in the commercial banking world. As a result, he just earned a promotion to Senior Vice President and Commercial Banker for INB in Champaign. Tom credits his success to the relationships he's built — both within the community and across his team at INB.

Tom’s collaborative mindset has helped INB continue to grow its presence in the Champaign-Urbana market. From the beginning of any client relationship, he makes it a priority to involve other departments — whether that’s wealth, treasury, mortgage, or retail.
“It’s always better to have another set of eyes and ears involved,” he says. “I’ve been fortunate to have great partners who jump in to help cultivate the relationship. We’ve had great success because of that team approach.”
“Honestly, my main focus has always been to build relationships with my clients,” Tom says. “As the relationship builds, I’ve found that the additional opportunities come with it.”
Building the Future of Banking in Champaign
As INB’s footprint grows in Champaign, Tom has his eyes on increasing market share and further embedding INB in the community. “My goal is for everyone in the community to know who INB is and why it’s such a great institution to work with,” he says.
That means continued involvement in community events, nonprofit work, and building up the INB team locally. Tom envisions bringing more of INB’s experts to Champaign full-time, allowing the bank to expand even faster.
As for his own portfolio, he’s focused on a handful of top prospects, developing strong, creditworthy relationships that contribute to the bank’s overall growth.
“If we can help these clients maintain and grow their businesses, that’s a win for everyone,” he says.
Adapting to an Evolving Industry
With more than 20 years in banking, Tom has seen the commercial lending landscape evolve — from shifting interest rates to the next generation of business owners stepping up. While lending fundamentals remain steady, the environment continues to change.
“There are more banks now than ever, which increases competition,” Tom notes. “But our leadership team is innovative and keeps a close eye on technology that can help us grow.”
He also sees room for industry-wide improvements that could level the playing field, such as more standardized pricing and underwriting criteria — though he admits those changes are unlikely anytime soon.
Leading by Example
Tom's dedication to the community is just as strong as his commitment to clients. He’s involved in the Champaign County Chamber of Commerce, Rotary Club, and other nonprofits — not just as a participant, but as a leader.
“Being visible, involved, and most importantly, engaged, helps promote INB in the community,” he says.
It’s a balancing act, but one Tom embraces. He believes in aligning professional goals with causes that matter personally. That alignment keeps him energized and motivated. “I love coming to work and engaging with the staff, my clients, leadership, and prospective clients,” he says. “It doesn’t feel like a chore when you love what you do.”
A Career Built on Trust and Tenure
Looking back, Tom is most proud of the long-term relationships he’s built — not just with clients, but also with the institutions he’s served. “I didn’t do a lot of job hopping. I’ve only worked at a few different banks. I look at INB as, hopefully, where I will retire,” he says.
To those just starting in banking, Tom offers this advice: “Learn every aspect of the business. Understanding retail, mortgages, wealth management, and commercial lending builds a strong foundation for success.”
And when it comes to commercial lending specifically? “Spend time learning credit analysis and underwriting the right way. That knowledge builds confidence, and the sales side will follow.”
