Nick Horton learned about the banking profession as a part-time teller while in college.
After graduating from Benedictine University in 2013 with a degree in finance and management, he took part in a management trainee program, with office space in the credit department. He eventually transitioned to mortgage. Nick says the program allowed him to gain knowledge in several departments. After completing the program, he became a banker and, ultimately, became a branch manager/commercial lender. “I knew that commercial lending was where I wanted to be eventually,” he says. In 2016, he joined INB as a credit analyst and became a commercial lender a year later.
A 2009 Williamsville High School grad, Nick encourages students looking to the future to consider a career in banking. He notes most everyone needs banking services, and banks offer a wide variety of career choices. “ . . . whether it be retail helping a customer with a simple personal checking account, mortgage helping someone obtain their goal of homeownership, or commercial lending assisting business customers with loans to help them grow their business.” Nick continues: There are opportunities for advancement in any of these departments. There are also back-end support roles such as loan ops, deposit ops, loan processing, IT, etc. that are just as important to the success of the bank as front-line employees.”
Nick shares one example of how he finds great satisfaction in his job. “I recently helped a customer save nearly $25,000 (over a 10-year period) by combining multiple loans. One of the loans had an effective interest rate of over 6.5%. By paying off that particular loan and combining with a loan already on INB’s books, the customer will see a savings in interest and fees of nearly $25,000. I felt like I truly helped my customer that day.”
